San Bernardino County wildfire is 75% contained

A wildfire burning in the San Bernardino Mountains near Silverwood Lake was 75% contained by early Thursday morning, and fire crews expect to have the blaze fully under control later in the day, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The fire began on Tuesday evening on the northern edge of the lake and has burned 66 acres – less than the original estimate of 100 acres. No homes have been threatened by the wildfire, and no evacuations were ordered by authorities.

The lack of any significant wind helped to keep the blaze from spreading quickly. The area also had been charred by the 2003 Old and Grand Prix fires. The Old Fire alone burned more than 91,000 acres, devastating neighborhoods in San Bernardino and the mountain communities of Crestline and Cedar Glen. The fire destroyed 993 homes and caused six deaths – mostly heart attacks.

The current wildfire is being battled by fire crews from the Forest Service and CalFire. No injuries have been reported.
