A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a carjacking suspect who allegedly stabbed a victim late Saturday in Willowbrook, officials said.

The incident occurred about 11:10 p.m. in the 12000 block of South Central Avenue when deputies from the Central sheriff’s station were attempting to detain the suspect. The man had his hands inside a duffle bag and allegedly refused deputies’ orders to remove them. He then raised the duffle bag and pointed at the deputies as if there was a gun inside the bag, said Deputy Lillian Peck.

One of the deputies then fired a round, striking the suspect, Peck said. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. The instrument used in the stabbing was recovered at the scene, Peck said. The condition of the stabbing victim was unknown.

No deputies were injured, officials said. Sheriff’s homicide detectives as well the Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating the deputy-involved shooting.
