On Thursday many Americans were commemorating Hurricane Katrina, the storm that ravaged New Orleans and neighboring towns.

Five years ago, on Aug. 26, 2005, Katrina had been declared a Category 3 storm, as it continued to brew in the Gulf of Mexico. (That ocean basin has since incurred a whole new set of problems.) It was much longer until Katrina made it to land, leaving devastation in its wake.

On Twitter and Facebook, some left comments in remembrance of the disaster.

Denise Carter: Happy Anniversary Hurricane Katrina! I remember it just like it was yesterday!!House full of family!! Stiff big! Hot! and SCARED!! But we made it!

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele: On the Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, please keep all of our fellow Americans who were and remain impacted by the storm in your prayers.

The Sandralee: OMG! Stop with the Hurricane Katrina anniversary Boo Hoo's!!! Yes, it was sad and a tragic, but that is the RISK you take living near an ocean and ignoring evacuation orders.

Maeganmb: Hurricane Katrina is not just statistics, those people lost family they had faces& those not directly effected by it need to remember that!

Were you affected by Katrina? Discuss in the comments.
