Man fatally shot in freeway road rage incident

Family members described watching in horror as a 28-year-old Bellflower man was killed Friday night in a road rage incident on an onramp to the 105 Freeway in Downey.

Juan Pacheco's wife and two young children were in the car with him during the shooting. The gunman is still at large.

Authorities say Pacheco was arguing with another driver as he drove toward the 105 Freeway along Lakewood Boulevard about 6:30 p.m., his wife, who was in the passenger seat, told police.

As they entered the eastbound freeway onramp at Woodruff Avenue, she heard a gunshot, Downey Police Lt. Phil Rigo told The Times.

"One of the kids, I think he saw the guy," Pacheco's father, Jesse Vega, told KABC-TV from the family's home in Bell. "There was a girl in the car, and he saw the guy roll down the window."

He was shot in the upper body, Rigo said. He pulled the car to the side of the freeway, got out and walked to the back of the vehicle, where he collapsed.

The suspect fled. Police are searching for a blue, 2002-03 Honda Accord with dark tinted windows and chrome rims.

"It's not worth it to kill a human being for nothing," Vega told KABC. "He should just turn himself in."
