Mayor Villaraigosa to hold bike summit Monday

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who broke his elbow last month in a bicycle accident, plans to hold a town hall meeting Monday on ways to make cycling easier and safer throughout Los Angeles.

“If there’s one thing everyone now knows after my recent accident, it’s that I like to bike in Los Angeles,” he wrote on his blog recently.  “The City’s landscape, climate, and neighborhoods offer a cyclist’s paradise.  Biking in Los Angeles should be a natural. Unfortunately most of our City was built with cars in mind.  It’s time to recognize that bicycles also belong on L.A.’s streets.”

Part of the discussion will include the Planning Department’s latest draft of the bicycle plan update to develop safe bike routes throughout the city.

‘Eventually we plan to build a network of 1,663 miles of bikeways,” he wrote. “I encourage everyone to take a look at the plan and give input.”

The meeting will be held at 9 a.m. at the MTA Board Room, 1 Gateway Plaza, Los Angeles.
