The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder's office in Norwalk will be staying open late Wednesday to accommodate an expected rush in gay marriages.
A stay on a judge’s decision to invalidate Proposition 8 -- the 2008 ballot measure that reinstated a ban on same-sex marriage in California -- is expected to be lifted Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The registrar’s Norwalk headquarters will stay open until 8 p.m. that day to offer marriage licenses and civil ceremonies if the stay is lifted.
Hours at other locations will not be affected, although for about a week officials will allow civil marriage ceremonies to be made at all offices without an appointment.
Earlier this month, U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker ruled that Proposition 8 violated federal constitutional guarantees of equal protection and due process, but he granted a temporary stay of his ruling in response to a request by the ban’s supporters seeking to appeal the ruling.
